# Smart EQ fortwo range and charging in daily use

*A week of city driving on a 17.6 kWh battery.*

> Driving the Smart EQ fortwo around town in 2018, I easily got 100 kilometres from a charge of its 17.6 kWh battery, about 130 in ECO mode, and charging overnight replaced petrol stops entirely.

The EQ fortwo packs a 96-cell, 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery into a car of 2.6M long and just over 1085KG. The roughly 60kW (80HP) motor sits close to the rear wheels, which frees the front axle for a turning circle of only 6.95M, and it does 0 to 60KM/H in 4.9 seconds, with no gearbox and no lag.
On a normal 230V outlet the battery charges to 80% in at most 6 hours, an optional wall box speeds that up dramatically, and public charging stations are easy to find with a smartphone app. Plugging in at home each evening meant a full car every morning, which cured me of petrol stations.
A practical note: the trunk takes two boxes of beer through the quick opening rear window, and with the passenger seat included I got to 96 bottles.
