Uptime monitoring belongs outside your own infrastructure: if my platform fails, chances are an internal monitoring service would fail with it, so this is one case where I deliberately chose an external service. I selected UptimeRobot because it has a great app and offers the types of monitoring I need. Under normal circumstances it is configure and forget. The app only asks for attention when something is wrong, but the dashboard shows the status and history of every monitor whenever I want to look. Notifications can be tuned precisely: mute individual monitors, add extra people or notification channels, and enable the iOS critical alerts that override Do not disturb. I set it to wake me in the middle of the night if something really bad happens, and it has caught rare bugs and outages that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
